A mala is traditionally a string of 108 beads. They have several uses, mostly focused around calming the mind. They can be used to help focus the mind during meditation by rotating each bead between two finger (but never the index finger as it represents the ego) until you have gone all the way around the string. They are also used to count mantras using the same method of spinning each bead between two fingers as you say that mantra, until you have gone all the way around, saying the mantra 108 times.
